bar admission options:
without bar examination
an applicant who meets the other state bar requirements listed below and is a
member of the bar of any u.s. jurisdiction may be admitted without examination
if the applicant has:
1. been a member of the bar of another jurisdiction for at least five years and
has, for at least four of the last five years immediately preceding the
application, been actively engaged in the practice of law in one or more of the
following:
a) private practice of law;
b) service as a judge of a court of record;
c) full-time teaching at a law school approved by the aba; or
d) the performance of full-time legal work in a legal capacity; or
2. received a scaled score of 150 or above on the mbe taken as a part of and at
the same time as the essay or other written bar examination given by another
jurisdiction, and has been admitted to the bar of the jurisdiction in which the
mbe was taken; and received a scaled score of 80 on the mpre transferable from
any jurisdiction. proof of the mbe score and a completed application must be
received within two years of the date of the examination in the jurisdiction of
admission.

examination components:
1. academic: mbe, mee, and 2 mpt questions.
2. ethics: mpre scaled score of 80 is transferable from any jurisdiction
within five years of the date of application.
examination dates:
july (deadline: march 1). late fees apply; however, no application postmarked
later than 90 days prior to the opening day of the july exam will be accepted.
application/admission fee: $150.00
other state bar requirements:
1. minimum age: 18
2. graduate of a law school approved, or provisionally approved, by the aba.
3. character check by the north dakota state bar board.
4. required annual fees: $250.00 (0-1 year after admission); $275.00 (1-5 years
after admission); $305.00 (5 years or more after admission).
regulation of in-house counsel:
north dakota century code, §27-11-01, prohibits practicing law in north dakota
without being admitted to the state bar. any person who violates this section is
guilty of a class a misdemeanor.
a state bar association multijurisdictional practice task force preliminary
report has recommended certain limited modifications to this regulation.

specialty certification:
north dakota does not have a specialty certification plan and does not regulate
lawyer specialization.
the north dakota rules of professional conduct do not address lawyer
specialization or certification. rule 7.1 merely prohibits lawyers from making
"false or misleading" statements.
